Meet Marilyn Biles of Marilyn Biles Collection in Tanglewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marilyn Biles.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It is my persistence and inner drive that doesn’t or won’t go away or give up. My hearts desire as a young woman was to work in the fashion industry and live in Manhattan. That didn’t happen for me due to a lack of support, as a young woman, I did what I had to do to survive. I worked at any job I could get and when I had small children, I took in other children to bring an income. Still, my heart’s desire was always to do something visually creative. When my own children were a little older I taught elementary age children in different schools and In The Art After School program at The Contemporary Arts Museum of Houston. In the summer, I had art classes for neighborhood children in my garage. When all my children were in school, I enrolled in an advanced painting class as a stimulating form of reentry to doing my own work. It was good for me to be around another serious artist in an encouraging environment.

Has it been a smooth road?
There always were obstacles along the way. But none of that could stop what’s inside of me from being expressed.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am primarily a painter, my work has evolved from realistic to abstract. My painting is oil on canvas, that’s what I specialize in. I am known for being an artist.

What sets me apart from others is my excitement about color and my ability to use it to convey emotion to the viewer. Which then shows in my work.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think Houston is a great place for someone to start out an work.
