Meet Joshua Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Smith.

Joshua, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in a small Texas town right outside the Houston area but moved to the city right after high school. I launched a career in real estate and worked in that arena for eight, and while I experienced much success, I dreamed of a career that aligned better with my creative purpose. So, in my 30’s, I risked everything and moved to NYC to attend the New York School of Interior Design. After working for an established interior design firm for a few years, in 2012 I decided to take another leap and open my own business. Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to create beautiful spaces for my clients across the country, was named a Rising Star and One to Watch by House Beautiful magazine and was even privileged to design The Huffington Post’s Meditation Room!

As an interior designer, I began to see the tremendous spiritual power of having a space that reflects who you are and how you want to live. I realized I wasn’t just designing spaces, but helping people design their best lives. I began to see this as my true calling: using all I’d learned from my own experiences, training, and design work to help others create richer and more joyful lives. This is what led me to spiritual coaching, which is where I currently focus most of my energies.

So, you can say that my first career was connecting my clients with the right homes, which evolved into me designing those homes, and now, I get to help people design their best lives!

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been the smoothest of roads, but I wouldn’t change any of it! I’ve come a long way, from a brief stint with homelessness and addiction in my early 20’s to living the life I have today. I think the biggest struggle I faced along the way, are those nagging feelings of fear and self-doubt that tend to accompany major life and career changes. These were especially poignant, when I decided to move to NYC to pursue interior design, and then later when I launched my own design firm. Each time I’ve had to level up, I’ve also had to conquer some fear, but each of those risks have gotten me one step closer to where I am. Each experience and leap of faith has brought me closer to my purpose and led me to a fuller and richer life, and I’m profoundly grateful for that and excited about what lies ahead.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I specialize in comprehensive lifestyle design, by bringing together two important modalities that enhance our lives and the way we live it – interior design and personal development. I think it’s this connection that sets Joshua Smith Inc. apart from the rest. Often there is either a focus on our inner selves, or on our environment exclusively, and not how interconnected these two things truly are. My mission is not only to bring light and beauty into the spaces where we dwell, but also into everyday experiences, helping people release limiting and outdated beliefs, and step into their bliss.

With my Interior Design work, I consider the role an interior plays in our lives and curate a lifestyle based on each individual and how they want to live. I believe that homes should be our sanctuaries, and I create spaces that inspire wellness, joy, and inspiration. I believe that a consciously created home can enhance our connection to ourselves and our loved ones.

With my Lifestyle and Personal Development work, I help my clients establish and maintain a deeper connection to themselves so they can truly live fuller lives and step into their own personal power. As a coach, I encourage innovative approaches to life, the development of new habits and an increased awareness of how thoughts and emotions guide our potential.

I focus on various methods for cultivating inner & outer transformations and offer a variety of experiences for individuals and organizations, including one-on-one coaching, customized interactive workshops and retreats, and guided meditations both in person and online. Some topics include Spiritual Fitness, Creating Sacred Spaces at Home, Spiritual Reboots and Enhancing Connection to the Divine.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I believe that more people will turn to coaching and group coaching programs, especially with the current changes occurring in the world. I think there will be a shift in focus from where we have been, to where we want to go, and as human beings, we often need accountability to uplevel our commitment to ourselves and our success.

As for design, I think sustainability and environmentally friendly design will take front and center stage. With the fast pace and loud noise of modern society, I also foresee a return to minimal and serene designs. I think our homes will become even more of a refuge, a retreat and a sanctuary, providing us the space we need to recharge, renew and restore!
