Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Carmen Doerr-Nauth.
Hi Dr. Doerr-Nauth, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Even as a little girl, I was always the one that wanted to help people. I would help my mom around the house, my brother, who lives with CP, family members, you name it. As I went through school, I always knew that I wanted to help people as part of my career, but I never thought I could be a doctor. I only knew traditional medicine, coming from a family with 2/3 uncles being MDs. As I neared graduation, I decided that I wanted to be in the Hospitality field, because that would be able to help people enjoy their meal, stay, conference, etc.
With that in-mind, I knew that I didn’t want to be in the back, I wanted to be where the people were, so I chose to get a degree in Hospitality Management from the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management. I worked my way through a well-known hotel in Orlando, starting at a restaurant and ending up in a management position helping groups with their conferences. This afforded me the opportunity to move from Orlando down to Coral Gables, FL, where I worked for a time, before hitting a wall and knowing that I needed to make a change.
While I enjoyed my career and the people I was able to meet, I knew in my heart, that I was meant for more. This is where I came to a crossroad. I did a lot of soul-searching and thought back to my somewhat recent experience with a chiropractor after a motor vehicle collision while I was still in Orlando.
I am not sure what exactly prompted that thought to enter my mind, but once it did, I was laser-focused and the rest is history. I quit my job, moved back to Orlando (where my fiancée at the time, now husband) was still living, and went back to school to take a few science classes that I was missing in order to start Chiropractic school. In January 2016, I began my journey to becoming a chiropractor. This is what was missing in my life and the calling that I had been avoiding. I was super nervous, as I knew I wasn’t as young as my classmates, but I was so determined that the nerves quickly relaxed.
Chiropractic school was a challenge unlike any I had faced, but was so rewarding and I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. After graduating, my husband, who had moved out of the country to move up in his position, was offered a position in Houston. We toured all around the suburbs, up in The Woodlands, down to Sugar Land, and out here to Katy. This felt like home the minute we got here and we decided that this is where we were going to plant roots and make our home. Initially, we were going to rent a space just down the street, but then we were fortunate enough to find the opportunity to build the building that we are currently in. This set us back about 9 months from our original intended opening, but it was so worth it in the end.
Aware Chiropractic has been open for about 15 months now, and we are so grateful to be a part of this community – we wouldn’t rather be anywhere else.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Opening during a pandemic was absolutely not what we expected. It definitely led to many a sleepless night, but in the end, it allowed us the opportunity to really grow as an office and set a solid foundation so that we are able to serve the community to our best ability. I lost count how many times I used the phrase, “everything happens for a reason.”
We had mentors during our opening and build-out, but even they had never seen these types of scenarios. The marketing events that we thought we would have were non-existent and people were afraid to come out of their homes, so even digital marketing wasn’t as fruitful as we had expected.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Aware Chiropractic?
Aware Chiropractic is a referral-based, family practice. We see babies as young as hours old, to patients into their 90’s and beyond. We are a neurologically based office, which means that we take a different approach to chiropractic and adjustments. We do not use any twisting, popping, or cracking, and we focus on corrective care, not just patch care. I am also Webster Certified, which means that I have additional training to be able to care for our pregnant mommas, which helps them have a more enjoyable pregnancy and delivery.
The technique that I use in the office is called Torque Release Technique, or TRT for short. There are a few of us in the area, but I am the only one in Katy, and the only female TRT chiropractor in the area. Many people say that they’ve had the technique before, as the instrument that we use looks similar to another popular technique, but it is very different and we see different results, which is my favorite part.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
If you are living with aches, pains, and dysfunction, STOP, you don’t have to. Many people don’t realize that chiropractic is beneficial for so much more than neck pain, back pain, and headaches, and that you don’t have to wait until you’re in an accident to see one. We help the body to function better overall. The brain and nervous system control every function in your body, and when the signals traveling along your nerves are not flowing the way that they should, we see things such as digestive issues, anxiety, bowel and bladder issues, numbness, tingling, breathing issues, brain fog, infertility, the list could go on and on. The majority of your nerves carry function signals which don’t transmit pain, so just because you aren’t feeling pain, doesn’t mean that you couldn’t benefit from scientifically specific chiropractic care. It’s never too early to see a chiropractor and the sooner you get checked, the sooner you can start living life on your terms, not the terms of pain and dysfunction.
