Meet Calicia Johnson of Student Career Studio in Third Ward

Today we’d like to introduce you to Calicia Johnson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Calicia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As an engineer by day, I’ve been volunteering to recruit collegiate students for full time and internships at my employer for seven years. Over the years, I’ve realized minority students are not aware of all the opportunities available to them, especially those who attend non-target schools.

I really enjoy engaging with students, learning about their story and identifying ways to help them achieve their goals. I could not find an organization where students could get everything they needed in one place, instead they had to visit multiple sites, which was very time-consuming.

I wanted to find an easier way to help students get the access and resources they needed, so I came up with Student Career Studio.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The hardest part for me was getting started. I had a lot of ideas but they were no good just sitting in my notebook. Thanks to my friends and family, they really pushed me to get the information out there. Now it’s just a matter of getting my brand to students and letting them know I’m here to help them.

Please tell us about Student Career Studio.
Student Career Studio was created with one goal in mind:  to convert students from being overlooked to being undeniable.  We help those who come from non-target schools, underrepresented ethnic groups, first generation and low income communities, with access to scholarship, internship and leadership opportunities. We seek to assist students get closer to achieving their dreams. We also provide personalized guidance and mentorship to encourage students to exhibit the best version of themselves. We assist with LinkedIn profile setup/reviews, resume reviews and mock interviews. What sets us apart is students are able to come to one site and get the information they need. We have information on scholarships they can apply to and internship opportunities across various industries, for a wide range of majors. We also highlight corporate leadership summits and diversity conferences students can attend for additional professional development. We provide clear and concise information with direct access to the opportunity.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’ve been extremely lucky to connect with so many students. I call it reverse mentoring because I’ve learned so much from them and I am inspired by their tenacity each and every day. I want students to come to our site and say, “wow I didn’t know this opportunity exist”. I hope to continue to reach more students across the country and help them reach their dreams.
