Check out Cindy Robertson’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Robertson.

Cindy, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve been interested in photography since I was a teenager and my first camera was a Kodak Disc 4000. Through the years I would take photographs and compile wee albums to tell the story of vacations, holidays and other events in my life. A life event that was instrumental in my journey as a documentary/lifestyle photographer was my wedding day. On the day I was posed this way and that, and the flow of the day was interrupted by the photographer wanting particular shots. It wouldn’t have been so bad if I liked the photographs, but I didn’t, and I didn’t know any alternatives at the time.

My style of photography has evolved through the years, but what remains true to my heart is to tell stories of everyday life with my camera.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
As a lifestyle/documentary photographer, I tell the stories of people’s lives candidly and unposed. My work focuses on capturing a moment in time; to capture emotions, to capture a mood, this is what I aim to do, and love to do.

One of my favorite quotes is by Robert Frank, “there is one thing a photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment.”

I hone my skill by hitting the streets and photographing people, architecture and whatever takes my fancy. Shooting street is always a challenge: to distill what’s around me into a camera’s frame.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
I think photographers fall into the trap that if they bought this and that – gear acquisition syndrome (GAS) – their photographs will be better and most often times they’re not. They should just save their money and hone their skills with the gear they have.

I don’t have a lot of free time, and to kill two birds with one stone, I’ll pull out my iPhone (SE) while on a run and shoot an interesting scene. A lot of my posts on Instagram are shot this way including one of my favorites from 2018, Mother & Son.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
People can visit my website, www.cindyrobertsonphotography.com or they can follow me on Instagram at www.instagram.com/cindyrobertsonphotography. Creatively, I like to stretch my legs and you will find that stuff on www.instagram.com/cindyscotia.
