Meet Betsy Austin of Tres Bien Antiques in West Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Betsy Austin.

Betsy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When my last child was a freshman in Highschool, I decided I wanted to follow my passion which was a love of French and European Antiques. I was a school teacher and also a stay at home Mom for years. I shopped the Roundtop show for many years, and thought one day I want have a booth In Roundtop! It led me to my dream job.

My grandparents were immigrants from France and I was surrounded by The French culture. My Grand-mère kept her sliver polished and linens perfectly pressed with a lavender spray. It was a lavender smell that will always be my favorite scent. My mother also loved antiques and beautiful furnishings.

In 2014 TresBien antiquities were born. I travel to France, Italy, Belgium to buy one of a kind 17-19th C. Antiques and ship containers back from the South of France. I have loved my travels and the sites I have seen! My biggest love is all the wonderful people I have met!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest challenge has been the business side of running my own business, from bookkeeping to computer work and social media. Thank god for the help of my husband and three millennial children.

Please tell us about Tres Bien Antiques.
I shop in France to bring back that one of a kind object. I have a variety of inventory, ranging in crusty patina to a more polished look. I stock French and Italian commodes, tables, Gustavian benches, objects, and lots of mirrors. I have a passion for mirrors and treat them like art. I buy what I love and try to keep clean lines as well.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Antiquing through France by myself. Even with navigation, I found myself lost in a quaint village or at an amazing view. One time I even ended up in a sunflower field. I got out of my car and just took in the wonder of that unplanned moment. I have a bit of a wanderlust in me and hope I can continue to discover new experiences.
